BEST AND WORST CARS FOR THE MONEY - 2010!!!!

Maybe the dust is settling. After a year of bankruptcies, massive recalls, brand shutdowns and Cash for Clunkers, the storms that have tossed the automotive industry may be blowing out. The recovery may be fragile and patchy, but it's there.

Amid all the industry turmoil, it's easy to forget about the spark that drives the car industry: consumers. After being battered with enough industry news to drown even the most perceptive analyst, car shoppers are still left with one question: which car should I buy?

The Awards

Especially now, it's all about value. U.S. News created the Best Car for the Money awards to identify the cars that should make anyone's short list. The awards highlight cars, trucks and SUVs that will not only please their owners the day they drive off the dealer lot, but will keep them – and their wallets – happy for years to come.

The awards are based on U.S. News' automotive rankings and estimated five-year cost of ownership from IntelliChoice. Combining the rankings with real-world costs helps to identify cars that are loved by of the majority of car reviewers and that provide good long-term value.

The Winners

Across 27 award categories, roughly a quarter of the award winners come from Toyota or Lexus, Toyota's luxury division. As you might expect, Toyota wins the Hybrid Car category, with the Prius, and Lexus wins the Hybrid SUV category with the RX Hybrid. However, not all Toyota award winners are so green: the Toyota Sequoia, Land Cruiser and FJ Cruiser also each take awards.

There are other surprises. In the compact and subcompact car classes, where you might expect Honda to dominate, the winners are the Nissan Versa and the Hyundai Elantra. Hyundai is also a spoiler with the Genesis, which beat out entries from BMW, Lexus and Infiniti to win Best Upscale Midsize Car for the Money.
As has been the case all year, the performance of domestic car companies varies. Chrysler didn't manage to win any awards, and while General Motors won two last year, this year they only took home the Best Luxury Sports Car for the Money Award, for the Chevrolet Corvette. Ford, who didn't have any U.S. News Awards in 2009, wins the family sedan class with the new Ford Taurus. The Ford F-150, a perennial best-seller, wins the Best Full-Size Truck for the Money.

The Losers

Where Chrysler did make a showing was on the Worst Cars for the Money list. These cars are despised by reviewers, and over the long-term, cost more to own (sometimes much more) than the class average. The Chrysler Sebring, which car experts deride for its cheap interior and poor performance, is the worst midsize car for the money. Not only is the Sebring unpopular with reviewers, it also has high ownership costs, due in part to its rate of depreciation. Chrysler also earned Worst Car honors for its minivans; both the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan finished at the bottom of their class in the awards race.

While Ford did well with its cars, the Mercury Mountaineer, from Ford's Mercury division, earned the Worst Midsize SUV for the money. While others in the class offer a car-like ride, the Mountaineer (and its Ford Explorer twin, which ranked right behind it) is truck-based, making it use more fuel than the competition and giving it ride and handling that's not as well-suited for city and suburban driving.

It wasn't just domestics that earned raspberries. Volkswagen, despite winning the Wagon and upscale small car classes, had the Worst Upscale Midsize Car for the Money with the VW CC. Mazda had both the best and the Worst Affordable Sports Car for the Money. The Mazda MX-5 won the award for the best car in the class, while Mazda's RX-8, due to its high maintenance costs, was the Worst Affordable Sports Car for the Money. Nissan was in a similar situation. It won big with the Versa in the subcompact class, but the Sentra is the Worst Compact Car for the Money.

What You Need to Know

The award winners range from tiny subcompacts to hulking trucks, fuel-sipping hybrids to gas guzzling SUVs. As different as they all are, they also have something in common: each offers a combination of day-to-day livability and value when compared to other cars in its class. While some of the winners may not set car enthusiasts' hearts racing, they showcase a blend of features that appeals to the majority of shoppers. Sure, there may be cars that offer more style, more cachet, or better 0-to-60 times, but the Best Car for the Money awards honor cars that aren't just good at one thing – they are good at many.

Exports up for 6th straight month, boost recovery

WASHINGTON – The economic recovery is likely to draw strength from exports such as farm products, autos, aircraft and industrial machinery — all of which helped lower the nation's trade deficit in October.

Exports of U.S. goods rose for a sixth straight month. Further gains in exports should bolster manufacturers, who struggled during the recession. Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar Inc., for instance, has predicted that its sales will rise next year, reflecting in part greater demand from China and other Asian markets.

Economists noted that much of the improvement in the trade gap reflected a fall in oil imports. But David Resler, chief economist at Nomura Securities, said U.S. exporters are benefiting from growing economies overseas and a weaker dollar. A weak dollar makes their goods cheaper in other countries.

Resler boosted his forecast for growth in the current quarter to 3.2 percent, from 2.9 percent. The U.S. economy grew at a 2.8 percent pace in the July-September period after a record four straight quarterly declines.

The trade deficit fell to $32.9 billion in October, 7.6 percent below a revised September deficit of $35.7 billion, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The improvement reflected a 2.5 percent jump in exports. Imports rose a smaller 0.4 percent, a gain that was held back by a big drop in oil imports.

Through the first 10 months of this year, the deficit is running at an annual rate of $364.8 billion. That's about half the gap for all of 2008. The narrower trade deficit reflects the impact of the recession, which cut consumer demand for domestic and foreign goods.

The stock market rose after the improved trade deficit was reported. In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up about 75 points, or 0.7 percent. Broader stock averages rose, too.

Meanwhile, the number of newly laid-off workers seeking jobless benefits rose more than expected last week, after falling for five straight weeks. Claims were partly inflated by a surge after the Thanksgiving holiday week, when many state unemployment offices are closed, a department analyst said. Seasonal layoffs in the construction industry also played a role.

"The key point ... is that the underlying trend in claims is falling rapidly," Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, wrote in a note to clients.

Initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 474,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was above analysts' expectations of 460,000 new claims. Economists closely monitor initial claims, which reflect the pace of layoffs and companies' willingness to hire.

The four-week average of claims, which smooths fluctuations, fell to 473,750, its 14th straight decline and the lowest level since September 2008.

If current trends continue, Shepherdson said, claims will fall below the 400,000 mark by February, which would signal that the economy is actually generating jobs. Even more optimistic economists say that net job gains could come in January or this month.

The number of people continuing to claim benefits fell by 303,000 to 5.16 million, the lowest level since February. The total unemployment benefit rolls have fallen in 11 of the past 12 weeks.

The so-called continuing jobless claims figure doesn't include millions of people who have used up the regular 26 weeks of benefits typically provided by states and are receiving extended benefits for up to 73 additional weeks.

About 4.6 million people were receiving extended benefits in the week ended Nov. 21, the latest data available. That's an increase of about 130,000 from the previous week and is partly due to an extension of benefits that Congress enacted last month.

The economy grew at a 2.8 percent pace in the July-September quarter, and many analysts say it is likely growing at a similar pace in the current quarter. But that is much slower than the average 6 percent rate in previous economic recoveries.

As a result, most economists expect the unemployment rate to rise in coming months and remain above 9 percent through the end of next year.

President Barack Obama outlined a new jobs program Tuesday intended to bring down the unemployment rate, which is near a 26-year high. That effort includes tax breaks to encourage companies to hire new workers, increase bank lending to small businesses and a fresh round of infrastructure spending.

Tiger Woods Admits Infidelity, Puts Golf Career on Hold

Tiger Woods issued a second, even more heartfelt apology, admitting for the first time to cheating on his wife and saying he's taking a break from professional golf to focus on improving himself.

"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children," the PGA pro says in a statement posted Friday on his Web site Friday. "I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.

"I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

"After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

"Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."

Woods, 33, previously apologized for unspecified "sins" and "transgressions." A string of women have now come forward claiming to have had affairs with him.

Tiger Woods' Car Crash, Domestic Dispute & Infidelity Allegations Linked As Saga Unfolds

Tiger Woods Seriously Injured in Car Crash,” read early headlines from a number of seemingly reputable sources on Friday morning, including the Associated Press. Immediately, well-wishers flooded blogs and twitter feeds on the Internet, hoping that the golf star’s injuries weren’t life threatening.

At approximately 3:30pm ET, Woods’ publicist quelled all concern over his physical condition with an official statement from Woods’ office and Health Central Hospital: “Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition. We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes.” Soon thereafter, the Mayor of Windermere, FL, reported that Woods was treated for facial lacerations stemming from the car accident. Air bags didn’t deploy within the vehicle because Woods was traveling under 30mph.

By 5:00pm ET, TMZ.com had begun its guerilla-style investigation, obtaining information from a neighbor stating that with the exception of a few scratches, Woods looked “fine.”

Just one hour later, evening news stations and reliable print media outlets, stemming from an article by Doug Ferguson and others at the Associated Press, reported that Tiger’s wife of six years, Swedish model Elin Nordegren, told investigators that she heard the car crash outside and rushed to her husband’s aid, smashing a golf club through the back window of his SUV to help him crawl out. The information was obtained from Windermere, FL Police Chief Daniel Saylor. ''She was frantic, upset,'' Saylor said in a briefing Friday night, according to the AP story. ''It was her husband laying on the ground.'' Saylor also stated that Woods was in and out of consciousness and mumbling incoherent statements.

But just ten minutes later, multiple Florida law enforcement officials told TMZ that both Nordegren and Woods admitted to having had a domestic dispute shortly before the accident. When authorities came to the couples’ home to conduct interviews, they were turned away by Nordegren, who claimed Woods was “sleeping.” They were instructed to come back the next day.

The story didn’t quite add up at this point. How could Woods have been injured so that he was unconscious in a car that was traveling under 30mph? Was he not wearing a seat belt? Furthermore, how did he get the lacerations around his mouth – was it from a shattered windshield? Could a “minor car crash” have caused Woods to get so stuck inside the car that the only way to safety was through the back window?

The digital rumor mill churned yet again, as bloggers wondered if there was a connection between the domestic dispute and Woods’ alleged affair with socialite Rachel Uchitel. Allegations of Woods' infidelity broke in the National Enquirer on November 25. The story was peppered with quotes from Uchitel’s friends about the torrid affair that started in June. Woods allegedly met Uchitel at a party in New York, and according to the Enquirer, she joined him on his recent trip to Australia, “sexted” with him on multiple occasions, and was eerily blasé when relaying details to friends about breaking up Woods’ young family.

According to the AP story, Uchitel denied having an affair with Woods when contacted by the Associated Press. "I resent my reputation is getting completely blasted in the media," she said. "Everyone is assuming I came out and said this. This is not a story I have anything to do with." She acknowledged that she was in Melbourne, Australia two weeks ago (when Woods was playing in the JBWere Masters) but claimed she was with clients and didn't see Woods the entire time she was there.

TMZ.com was the first to break the news at 12:08 ET on Saturday morning that Nordegren, contrary to earlier reports, had used the golf club to smash the moving vehicle while in a rage, causing Woods to become disoriented enough to crash the car. TMZ also claimed that the lacerations to Woods’ face were inflicted by Nordegren during the domestic dispute, and that Nordegren chased after Woods with the golf club when he attempted to escape in his SUV.

TMZ.com was once considered to be just a bogus gossip site, but ever since they were the first to report the death of Michael Jackson, their reputation has risen considerably as a credible news source.

Of course, until we hear it directly from Woods or Nordegren, all of these reports are mere speculation. We live in an era where the ethical news sources of yesteryear are now being forced to report rumors in order to keep up with the seemingly less ethical news sources of today, such as gossip sites and blogs. Clearly, the code of ethics in journalism (a term that may also be outdated) is under rapid assault.

Details will undoubtedly continue to emerge regarding Woods’ crash, the domestic dispute with his wife, and the allegations of infidelity. Perhaps in the end, TMZ.com’s latest report will too be proved fictitious, only to be forgotten when juicier details come along.

We may never know the whole truth about what happened last night between Woods and his wife, but one thing is for sure: no matter how many trophies Woods hoists between now and the end of his career, his once near-perfect reputation has been tarnished.

Australia shipping alert over massive iceberg

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australian authorities Friday issued a shipping alert over a gigantic iceberg that is gradually approaching the country's southwest coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the once-in-a-century cliff of ice, which dislodged from Antarctica about a decade ago before drifting north, was being monitored using satellites.

"Mariners are advised that at 1200 GMT on December 9, an iceberg approximately 1,700 kilometres (1,054 miles) south-southwest of the West Australian coast was observed," it said, giving the iceberg's coordinates.

"The iceberg is 140 square kilometres in area -- 19 kilometres long by eight kilometres wide."

Experts believe the iceberg -- known as B17B -- is likely to break up as it enters warmer waters nearer Australia, creating hundreds of smaller icebergs in a hazard to passing ships.

"It's still 1,700 kilometres away, so it's quite a long way away, it's not really on our doorstep yet but it's been heading steadily towards us," glaciologist Neal Young said Thursday.

Young earlier told AFP that an iceberg of that size had probably not been seen in the area since the days when 19th century clipper sailing ships plied the trade route between Britain and Australia.

The iceberg has been floating around Antarctica since shearing off the icey continent but had lately begun heading north because of ocean currents and weather conditions.

Its discovery comes after two other large icebergs were spotted further east, off Australia's Macquarie Island, followed by more than 100 smaller chunks heading towards New Zealand.

Young described the icebergs as uncommon, but said they could become more frequent if sea temperatures rise through global warming.
